We'll have a short quarterly membership meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 31 at the club to give an update about our finances, membership, and upcoming maintenance and construction projects.

Sailing Class in September & October

Beginning sailing classes will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays on Sept. 4 and Sept. 18 and Oct. 2 and Oct. 16. Classes are free for WRBC members. Nonmembers can join the Club on a Provisional Membership for $50, which includes class registration and access to the Club for 30 days. Each class provides 30 minutes of classroom time and 2 hours in a sailboat on the water. To register, contact Chris Roberts, 972-693-7271 or chrisroberts2010@gmail.com.

Make-Up Work Day Projects

Our next work days won't be scheduled until the Fall, but the club has several smaller projects that need to be done before then. These projects will take a couple of hours and can be completed either on weekday evenings after work, or on weekends. If you missed the earlier scheduled work days and you'd like to do a make-up work day, let us know when you can help us out and we'll schedule the projects with you. WRBC is pleased to announce that the Texas Sunfish Racing Circuit will have their 5th circuit stop of 2010 at White Rock Lake on August 28-29, 2010. Last year during the Wrangle Regatta, the Sunfish had 16 boats on the line! This year we expect more at the first annual ROCKFISH REGATTA!

Mike Swope, WRBC member and kayakpower.com guy, organized an introduction to kayaking class that was held last evening and turned out to be a tremendous amount of fun for everyone in attendance.

"Mike, I had a blast!! And you were a terrific instructor," said Miles and later said, "Anybody who did not come out for this last night missed some serious fun."

"Thanks guys for a fun evening, I don't know how we got a 6 hour class into 90 minutes? I guess I just talked fast," said Mike Swope.

One of the biggest costs with the boats these days is the cost of delivery, if boats are shipped via common carrier or delivered by the factory the additional cost figures in somewhere between $500-800 for each unit. Delivering a single boat is cost prohibitive on a run that far to Dallas. However multiple boats that are delivered on a single run helps cover the cost of delivery. The more boats to a trailer means a better price.

We are hopefully working on a new boat coming down this spring, and it would be great to have a few more going with it. So to that purpose I am proposing two options. A new boat option and also a rigged hull option. Hopefully we can come up with three to four boats which would in turn save everyone on the shipping.

2010 Butterfly complete package list is $4500.

Spring offer for the Dallas fleet which includes hiking strap, ratchet block and vang is $4100. If more then three boats/hulls commit the shipping cost would be included in that price. This is an additional $500 value.

2010 Butterfly rigged hull is $3200.

Spring 2010 offer for the Dallas fleet is $2800. This comes with everything ready to swap over your rig, rudder, board and sail. If more then three boats/hulls commit the shipping cost would be included in that price. This is an additional $500 value.

If boat orders are placed early enough we can also offer your choice of solid color. It would be great to have these boats all come down for the Wrangle regatta in the beginning of June.

If you have questions feel free to contact us. We just got our first batch of 2010's delivered to Michigan and it would be great to have more boats going South as well.

About 30 people attended our Annual Meeting at the cafeteria (with hot food, white linen table cloths, crystal chandeliers and most importantly, HEAT). Congratulations to Mike Sweeney, who was awarded the Dan Shroder trophy for meritorious volunteering at the club throughout the years! Butterfly Year in Review Fleet News

It is THAT time of year again! Awards to give out, parties to plan, new officers to elect, the 2010 sailing calendar to plan, accomplishments to review, 2010 goals to plan, volunteers to find, commitments to make; and, let us not forget, holidays, spending, family and in-laws. Aah, I can feel the stress levels and tension starting to build. Yep, tis the season!A veritable powder keg of emotions. Different opinions, different goals, conflicting obligations, different methods of handling things, and, of course, feelings. Oh, as if the holidays were not stressful enough.

Sailors seem to find a state of peace, serenity and rejuvenation on the lake. Sometimes they just want to holler or beat the snot out of someone without going to jail) and the lake lets them do that too. Cheap therapy.

Yep! White Rock will be a hopping place this holiday season. How lucky are we to be able to escape the daily grind and spend time with such a dysfunctional group and actually enjoy it and all it home. Come give the Butterfly fleet a try this winter. We are a couple of degrees mellower than the normal White Rock sailor.

The Fly Fleet had a great year. We began the year leaning heavily on our CSC members and the use of the CSC rescue boats for our races and finished the year leaning heavily on WRBC with its new rescue boat, clubhouse and finger piers. Our Wrangle Regatta this year grew to almost fifty boats in three fleets (Fish, Flys, Lasers) with many off-lake sailors joining us and the CSC facilities accommodating the bulk of the competitors with the Flying Scot fleet doing committee. Thank you CSC!!

The Butterfly sailors are becoming more active outside of their regular Saturday races. The Fly fleet had as many boats as the Flying Scot fleet for the State Fair this year. The Fly fleet also stepped up and helped out with duty for both the Open House and Terlingua regattas and added a little bonus at the Open House by taking pictures and videos and posting them on our website.

Several Butterfly sailors have also been active in other fleets and sailed on the Sunfish, Laser, Flying Scot, J/22, and J/24 circuits. Of course, we cannot forget that we have managed to coax the currently club-less, former world blah, blah, blah, Doug Peckover, into sailing a Butterfly and he went and won the Butterfly National Championship in Missouri. Some of us also followed his sailing adventures at the Worlds this year where he took a 6th place despite currently being legally blind. We are anxious to see what he accomplishes after he gets his new eyes for Christmas.

Two of our members, Amber and Dave, upgraded with brand new Butterflys and we have had many guests sail our popular fleet boats throughout the year. We have run various sailing drills before racing which have been entertaining. The fleet also began tinkering with the concept of a Round Table Club which has taken off slowly and begun moving to different venues. Our website has been a new little twist this year with the addition of all sorts of pictures, videos and articles.

We will continue to sail throughout the winter on Saturdays and we are just about the friendliest and most helpful fleet around. Come out and join us. We would love to have you!

New Finger Piers

The new finger piers are complete for this year! The same construction crew that built our main walkway also built our new finger piers and completed the job in just over a week. With the new rescue boat and work party repairs tapping on our club budget for the year, we chose to only construct the first 50 feet on either side of the main deck out from the club house. Next year, we will complete either side out to the length of the existing old finger piers. But for now, we have a beautiful new place to dock and rig!

Gates Locked

Please DO NOT unlock the club gates. We have come to the club several times where the gates were wide open and have experienced some theft and vandalism lately. So we must ask you to not leave the gates open or switch the lock to the open position, even if you are just making a quick run to your car. Our best guess is that members have done so loading or unloading from the club to the car and just forgot to lock the club back up. We all have to be aware that our club is in the middle of a big city public park. Thanks for your cooperation on this to help protect our club and member property.

WHAT A GREAT 4th of July party! We had more than 100 people enjoy fantastic food and a magnificent band, the Rhythm Addicts, and then we all oohed and aahed about the 4 different sets of fireworks we could see from our club.

A party that big and that much fun couldn't be put on without the help of a whole lot of people, so thank you to everyone who pitched in!
Special thanks to Bob Pingel who cooked all of our burgers and hot dogs, AND supplied the cool head/neck bands everyone was given at the gate.
Thank you to Sharon Sweeney and Mike Sweeney for bringing in all of the food and decorating the clubhouse! Thank you to Beverly Howard for helping get the clubhouse clean and ready for the party and for manning the gate for us! Thank you to Dave Skinner for being on standby to run the Rubber Ducky 500 fun regatta--even though it was scrubbed because of too much wind (but the wind thankfully made the heat almost bearable).
Thank you to Rob Owen for getting the band for us (and playing in the band too!), and for putting up the sun shade on the clubhouse and helping Shaun Hoffman and Miles Zitmore put up tarps, tents and a mister. Thank you Shaun and Miles! and thank you to Andrea Ridout for securing all of our door prizes for us!

FLOOD SUMMARY: THANK YOU!

THANK YOU to everyone who helped put our club back together again Saturday after White Rock Lake flooded on Thursday, June 11, when parts of Dallas got more than 10 inches of rain in less than 24 hours.

Attached is a picture showing the water up to the mailbox at our club's front gate, our parking lot under water and the lake flooded up to the road. Several of the catwalks between our davits floated off and we retrieved as many as we could find in the lake and surrounding parking lots. We removed huge trees, branches and other trash off the docks and davits, re-secured the main walkways and put together parts of the finger piers after retrieving huge sections of those off the street. It was hard, dirty, hot work and we could certainly feel every bit of the 110 degree heat index Saturday! Thank you to all 30 people who showed up on very short notice to help!

"Basics of Sailing" Class, June 15 & 22

WRBC will present a “Basics of Sailing” class from 6:00-8:30 p.m. on two Mondays, June 15 & 22. The class is free to WRBC members. Nonmembers who want to participate in the classes can join the club on a Provisional Membership.

The Provisional Membership fee is $50 and entitles them to the use of the club for 30 days and to attend the two class evenings. To reserve a spot in the class or for more information, please contact WRBC’s Vice Commodore for Education, email Dave Skinner or call him at 214-228-2355.

2009 Wrangle Regatta

Discover Sailing Thursday, June 4th

We had to reschedule our Discover Sailing to 6:00-8:00 p.m. this Thursday, June 4, because here was no wind last Saturday afternoon. So if you’ve ever wanted to take a ride on a sailboat, his is your chance!

WRBC will have a few skippers and boats ready for you to give sailing a try. Bring your relatives, coworkers, neighbors and friends too. Just show up! Sunglasses, caps and sunscreen are recommended. If the weather is not appropriate for a safe and enjoyable sailing experience (if he wind is too strong or weak, or if there are storms in the area), we will reschedule to a later date.

Be sure to check the website to see if the weather is cooperating with us or if we have to eschedule again.

Wednesday Evenings on the Lake

Join us on the lake on Wednesday Evenings to kayak, cruise or race! There is a CSC rescue boat on the lake for the Wednesday Evening Sailing races that begin at 6:30 and go until dark and that are open to all boats.

Whether you’re kayaking, racing a sailboat or just floating around the lake, it’s a great midweek pick-me-up, so come on out to play!

New Rescue Boat

Our new rescue boat is being manufactured and we’re picking it up the first week in July. We’ll be training members on how to use it after it arrives at the club.

It is a 17 foot Boston Whaler Guardian (same rescue boat used by police and fire departments) with a 60 hp Mercury 4-stroke, big-foot motor.

Sailing Introduction

Join the adventure with this introduction to sailing for adults. Learn the basics of sailing through a combination of classroom sessions and on-the-water instruction. Our goal of placing a maximum of three participants per boat means individual attention and enables quick translation of instruction into experience. If you're a first-time sailor or just need a refresher, this course is for you.

We offer two fun-filled weekends for only $175.00. We will meet at Grapevine Sailing Club which is located at Scott's Landing Marina on the south side of Lake Grapevine. Each day begins at 9:00 a.m. and lasts until 3:00 p.m., depending on the wind. Classroom sessions will be held each morning with the remainder of the day spent on the water with an instructor and other seminar participants. You will change boats each day in order to meet new people and learn about different types of sailboats.

Typically, we do not put friends and family on the same boat as it can cause distraction. ("Don't yell at me!" "I'm not yelling!") Let us know at registration if you must be with someone in particular or have special needs. On the last day, we plan slightly less time on the water and hold a "graduation" party on the dock afterwards.Days on the water in June can be long and hot. To be prepared you will need to bring:
WATER and soft drinks in a small cooler
LIFE JACKET - let us know if you need one.
Lightweight, breathable clothing
White-soled shoes - they don't scuff the boats.
SUNSCREEN, SUNGLASSES AND HAT
Change of clothes or swimsuit - you never know!
Snacks or lunch - bring your own or purchase from us.
Sailing gloves - we suggest you invest in some

THANK YOU!
Thank you to everyone who joined in our two work parties! We had 40 people at the first week and another 25 people at the second week and accomplished a huge amount of work! We rebuilt the walkway to the east pad, reinforced the west finger pier, rebuilt 6 davits and recabled 4 other davits, rebuilt 4 catwalks and reinstalled all of the others misplaced by the flood, cleaned up the whole club from the flood that left a water line just under the windows in the clubhouse, built a workbench with a sink across from the tool room, installed a larger clubhouse sink and drinking fountain, and built a kayak landing deck.
Everyone remarked what great workers all of our club members are and we actually had fun doing all that work! THANK YOU to all of you!

LAKE LEVEL
At one time, we were told that the contractor might have to lower the lake level as much as two feet to repair the spillway, but when I spoke with the water department yesterday, they are now saying they may not have to lower the lake level at all, and if they do, it will be during next winter.

Here's a reminder that White Rock Boat Club is having another work party this Saturday (May 9) beginning at 8 a.m. and lunch will be served. Also bring work gloves, knee pads, hats and sunglasses (protective eye wear).

Again this week, we'll have another six different teams working on six different projects, so we can definitely put everyone to work no matter what your skill level!

RECAP: Spring Spruce Up Day

Thanks to all who came out to spruce up their boats Sunday April 19. We had about 20 people in and out all afternoon cleaning and waxing their boats, attaching new parts and finally getting around to those pesky things they've been meaning to do on their boats but never took the time. Bob smoked marinated whole chickens and vegetables on the grill and the side dishes were tasty too. Even though there was a little wind, the sun warmed the day up nicely and the clubhouse was comfortable with the sun streaming in, warm food and enjoyable company. Marsha has agreed to be the new secretary on the board, so will no longer be our social committee co-chair, but we sure will miss the great parties she's thrown for us--like the one on Sunday! Thank you Marsha and Bob for another great party! Please let us know if you have someone in mind to step in on the social committee to help throw our next parties with Bob.

Bring your buckets and sponges for the sprucing up that will be from 2-5 p.m. We’ll have experts on hand to teach you how to rig and tune your boat. And then from 5-8 p.m., we’ll have hot dogs and hamburgers at the clubhouse just for fun! Come join us revel that Spring’s finally here and it’s BOATING SEASON!

RECAP: Wednesday, April 15, 2009 Evening Sail

The 2009 Wednesday Evening Sailing kicked off with beautiful weather and good participation.

From the WRBC, new member David Yancy and his son sailed along with Shaun Hoffman in his Sunfish and Miles Zitmore in his DaySailer. Gary Eppink was also at the club and worked on repairing the telephon line within the club house.

From the CSC, Bowman and Jim O'Connor set the starting line by heading up the race committee duty. Dudely Bayne manned the rescue boat, and Jim Wilson and Marsha Wulff assisted with race duty. Marsha also handled food preparation and clean up which followed the sail.

From CSC, 10 Lasers, a few Butterflies, V15s, a Corinthian and a Flying Scot or two enjoyed the beautiful evening of moderate breezes and temperature followed by burgers and dogs.

All total from both CSC and WRBC, approximately 20 boats participated in the first 2009 Wednesday Evening Sail. Thanks to all who made the evening a success!

RECAP: Spring Happy Hour held April 9, 2009

The WRBC Spring Happy Hour had 39 people RSVP, and 36 people attended the event! Very little food and refreshments were left unconsumed.

Wednesday Evening Races to begin April 15, 2009

Wednesday evening race series will consist of as many races as daylight permits. Only one race committee boat staffed with two committee members should be necessary. The course shall generally be a W2 (windward-leeward, twice around), a W2½ (twice around plus a windward leg to finish), or a O (triangle plus a windward leg to finish) to facilitate as many races as possible before sunset with 3 or 5 minute starts. The first start shall begin at 6:30 p.m. promptly. While the Wednesday evening series is open to all boats, the Laser Fleet requests the race committee keep track of finishes of each participating Laser. Three boats of any fleet shall have a separate start and the general start, if any, shall always be the last start.

The Laser Fleet will provide sailing instructions to the race committee prior to each race and those instructions may be found at http://wrlls.blogspot.com/ in advance.

Thanks to everyone who is volunteering for the Wednesday evening race committee. Your help in making Wednesday evenings fun, competitive and making sure the first gun goes off at 6:30 p.m. is very much appreciated by all participants.

Annual Membership Meeting February 17th, 2009

Earlier this week, Roger Hansen resigned as Commodore of the club because of family health reasons, and the board of directors voted Megan Doren as the new Commodore to serve out his remaining term. The Board thanks Roger for all of his diligent efforts through the years he has served, and most recently in rebuilding the club. Roger will continue to provide counsel as the Past Commodore Director on the WRBC Board.

A proposed full slate of officers for 2009 will be presented for membership vote at the annual meeting which has been scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at the Highland Park Cafeteria (in the Casa Linda shopping center at the corner of Buckner and Garland Road next to the Albertsons and behind El Fenix).

The cafeteria has waived the room charge if we eat there, so if you want, please join us for a bite to eat before the business meeting about 6:15 p.m. The board will be mailing out the club's newsletter shortly, but wanted to promptly let the membership know of these developments.

The US SAILING Race Management Committee, Area F, and the Texoma Sailing Club are sponsoring this seminar. It is designed for people who have some race committee experience. However, newcomers are also welcome. It will be held at the Texoma Sailing Club beginning at 0900 on Saturday, January 24, 2009 and will end by 1800.

The topics covered include: RC objectives, competition formats, notice of race, sailing instructions, RC jobs, RC equipment, race day preparations, setting the course, starts, during the race, finishing, post-race RC responsibilities and scoring.

The principal instructor for the seminar is Jim Tichenor, a US SAILING National Race Officer and Senior Judge. He will be assisted by Gary Witt, who is also US SAILING Race Officer.

At the seminar you will need your own copy of The Racing Rules of Sailing (“RRS”) for 2009 - 2012, and you will be supplied a copy of the latest version of the Join the Race Committee Team . The seminar study questions are posted on the US SAILING web site (www.ussailing.org/racemgt/documents/RMStudy-Basic.pdf). You should complete the study questions to the seminar prior to the seminar beginning.

The objective test, which is given at the conclusion of the seminar, is optional. However, in order to be certified in the US Sailing Race Officer Program, you are required to attend a basic seminar and pass the tests at the required level. In order to be certified as a Club Race Officer you will also need to have your own copy of the current US Sailing Race Management Handbook, and meet the program’s other criteria.

The workshop fee for US SAILING members ($20.00) includes: continental breakfast, lunches, and all workshop materials. You may register on-line or use the enclosed registration form. Advanced registration is required, and the number of participants is limited to 30. The deadline for advanced registrations is January 18, 2009.

NEWS: White Rock Sailors at the 2008 Wurstfest Regatta

Sailors from both clubs on White Rock Lake, competed in the Wurstfest Regatta at Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas on November 1-2, 2008. Overall, White Rock Lake sailors were more than half of the total competition in the event. Traditionally, the regatta has several Flying Scot sailors.

From White Rock Boat Club, Shaun Hoffmann finished in 3rd place out of 23 in the Sunfish fleet.

From the Corinthian Sailing Club, Doug Peckover took first place out of 16 in the Laser fleet. Richard Wade, also of Corinthian Sailing Club, took first place out of 18 in the Flying Scot fleet.

In the Juniors, Tyler Killion from C.S.C. finished 3rd in the Optimist Fleet. And, Stewart Draheim finished 1st in the 420 Fleet.

Overall, a total of 21 skippers from White Rock Lake competed in the large regatta at Canyon Lake, TX. Congratulations to all for representing our two clubs!

First Fall Workday on 10/25/2008 at 8:30 AM

Just a reminder that our first fall workday at the pier will be this Saturday, 10/25, starting at 8:30 AM. Peter Whitley will have materials on hand for davit and walkway repairs and installations.

It is however, important that individual members bring items such as gloves, power saws, hammers, drills or power drivers, bits, extension cords and other such hand or power tools which may be available to them for use on the docks.

We will be providing morning snacks and lunch so it would be appreciated if you could RSVP to this email indicating if you plan to be in attendance so that we can estimate the quantity of food to have available.

We hope to see a good representative group on hand to continue the progress we have made this year with completion of the new clubhouse and main pier construction. See you Saturday..

By now everyone should have received our Fall Newsletter which included a notice near the bottom regarding our Pier Party to be held this coming Friday Evening 10/3 at the pier starting at 7:30 PM.

As the notice stated, the club will furnish the meats, and our valued new member, Bob Pingel will be doing the cooking for all. It was suggested that attending members bring a side dish to share, as well as drinks for their own group.

We need to be able to estimate the number of people who plan to be in attendance so Bob can order and prepare the chickens, burgers etc., so we asked that you RSVP to help us plan for the occasion and know how much to order. The Newsletter gave Bob's EMail address but if you will simply reply to this EMail to me I will pass the information along to Bob and the rest of the Board. It would be appreciated if you could reply by Wednesday night so that we can make our plans. If possible a side comment regarding your planned side dish or desert might help if it looks like we need to balance it out somewhat. Also please mention the number in your party.

I hope to see as many of you there as possible as we inaugurate our great new clubhouse and I personally wish to thank all those responsible for our outstanding progress in the past year. Besides the new club house and pier. we have welcomed approximately 20 new members in this period, an increase in membership also of approx 20%.. I think that is real progress.....Thanks to everyone who participated.

The Lasers have race duty this weekend and are changing things up a bit. The regualar racing will start at 10:30; however, beginning at 10:00 they will be running rolling start drills for those that want to practice their starts. The general format is a 1 to 2 minute starting sequence with a whistle blown for a recall and then the drill begins again.

GATE CODES TO BE CHANGED NOTICE

In an effort to maintain security and synergy within the WRBC club, the gate codes and locker codes will be changed just after June 15th, 2008. To recieve the new set of numbers, all paid members will recieve the numbers by mail and/or by contacting the WRBC membership board.

With the new clubhouse nearing completion and further scheduled facility updates and modifications, security is being thought through as well. Please make sure your dues are current, so you can be sure you are not left outside the gate.

Rumors have it that the City of Dallas may be putting lights, as a security measure, around White Rock Lake soon. City Council man, Sheffie Kadane, will be leading a citizen forum on May 22nd at Winfrey Point. This is an opportunity for everyone to see a sample of what the light would look like, and it is a time for Mr. Kadane to collect the thoughts of us and Dallas citizens.

Commodore's Report

The flooding earlier in the week caused substantial damage to some boats, so we suggest you check your rigs immediately. We also need to talk about proper storage of boats in davits.

A work party is called for Saturday at 9:00 AM to repair some of the damage and rearrange things.

You will notice that the new clubhouse is now in place and all but dried in, and constructed within budget, as the board planned. It is now time that the membership exercise their obligation to pay their dues on time by April first.

New Construction Update and the March 18th Flood of 2008

New construction of the clubhouse is moving smoothly despite the torrential rainfall received on March 18th, 2008. Currently, the siding has been added to the frame and the plywood to the roof. Keep checking back soon for further information. Overall, we are excited that the new clubhouse is coming along at a great pace!

The Butterfly fleet 20 completed construction of the east boat pad on Saturday, the 15th of March 2008. They had great organization led by Bruce Faust. Construction was started at 8:30 AM and was done by 6:00 PM the same day.

It is reported that clean up volunteers will be needed for Saturday, the 22nd. As you can see from the photos, several boats have shifted position in their davits. The water level rose 2 feet above the deck and you can see the watermark left in the parking lot photo.

The White Rock Boat Club was founded in 1960 by a group of avid racing enthusiasts and boat builders. The current membership of the WRBC includes experienced and inexperienced sailing and boating enthusiasts. Our members’ willingness to share their sailing experience and expertise remains the strength of our organization. The Club offers a wide range of sailing and boating opportunities from fleet racing by sailboat class along a predetermined course; to the lone sailor enjoying the sport of sailing on beautiful White Rock Lake.

Since the creation of the lake in 1910, it has been the home to numerous Regattas, boating competitions and other outdoor activities. For nearly fifty years White Rock Boat Club has encouraged sailing, boating and sailboat racing. White Rock Lake remains the perfect venue for all types of non-power boating activities. The size of the lake (2 x 3/4 miles) restricts boating activity primarily to use by sailboats, kayaks, canoes and crewing.

Although White Rock Lake remains small by comparison, this 1,015 acre urban lake can be a relatively demanding lake to sail. Under the proper weather conditions even the most experienced sailor will be challenged by this lake. By way of contrast, on the perfect day, White Rock Lake remains a place of beauty, solace and tranquility as an ideal escape from the worldly demands of the big city that rises boldly on the distant horizon.

White Rock Boat Club offers our members safe and affordable access to the lake and its environs. In addition, the Club’s design helps to protect the member’s boats, boating gear and privacy. We encourage our members and their families to share in the kind of fun and adventure that comes from sailing, kayaking and canoeing. The beauty of White Rock Lake Park and its close proximity to our homes and offices creates a special neighborly feel that other larger, more crowded lakes cannot offer.

Club History

The fourth and last club to be established on the lake was the White Rock Boat Club which was formed in 1961 as the brainchild of three members of the Corinthian Sailing Club. CSC was having a problem with tracking davit ownership and the price of davits escalated due to demand since the club had no control over prices.

Two of the founders, the Oetkings, had also developed a fine catamaran called the Hellcat (photo) and had gone into production with growing sales, but they couldn't find davits at CSC. WRBC was constructed not only to supply reasonably priced davits, but to help sell Hellcats. The club sold davits to help pay for the construction of the club, with the provision that the club could buy the davit back if the owner left the club. The club has exercised this right and now owns and leases most of its davits.

The club was constructed with a few differences from its present configuration as can be seen in the 1968 photo above. In order to promote organized class sailing, WRBC at one time limited the type of boats kept at the club to racing classes. In the 1970s, the following classes of sailboats were eligible for membership: Butterfly, Coronado 15, Flying Scot, Harpoon, Lido, Lone Star 13, MC Scow, M16 Scow, M20 Scow and Rebel. Racing Information

SATURDAY SERIES RACING

At WRBC, races are held every Saturday, with the first gun scheduled for 10:30AM. In the winter series (Dec., Jan., and Feb.), the first gun is at noon. Predominately, the Butterfly class has 7-15 boats on the line.

Occasional guests are welcome. Show up at the White Rock Boat Club an hour before races and see if a boat is available to borrow.

On the lake, the Flying Scot Class and other centerboard boats race every Sunday, with the first gun scheduled at 1:30 PM. Please check the CSC web site for up to date instructions.

Those who race regularly should become at least an associate member of either the WRBC or CSC.

Recently, Lasers have been racing with us. Any single-handed board boat is welcome on the starting line. For the moment only Butterflies are 'officially' scored.

Fall Membership Meeting

Please be advised that the fall 2007 quarterly membership meeting of the White Rock Boat Club has been scheduled for the evening of Monday November 19, 2007 at the clubhouse. This meeting was postponed from the normal date of November 5 due to unavoidable circumstances.

Please note that our last meeting was inadvertently referred to as the quarterly meeting which was an error.

Sailboat Registration

All sailboats 14 feet in length or longer are required to have current registration and display TX numbers when on Texas public water (e.g. White Rock Lake), including when docked, moored, or stored. Texas Parks and Wildlife Officers can and will ticket boats that are not in compliance. Information, regulations and forms are available at the Texas Parks and Wildlife website.

Racing Rules of Sailing 2005-2008

Every four years, in the year following the Olympic Games, the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) issues a revised edition of the racing rules which are endorsed by US Sailing. The revised rules took effect January 2005.

The new rules are available on the ISAF website and the US Sailing prescriptions are also available online. The rule books with prescriptions may also be purchased from US Sailing. A good summary of the changes to the RRS was provided courtesy of the International Lightning Class Association.

I guess we prayed a little too hard for rain. In the span of 48 hours Dallas received between 4 and 7 inches of rain. All of that water ended up in White Rock Lake.
